Sandra Marie (Hume) Finzel

Sandra Marie (Hume) Finzel was born on October 7th, 1954 to A. Marie (Hamlin) and Kenneth Bert Hume. She passed away at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after a brief illness on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2021.


Sandy was born in Waterloo, Iowa and spent most of her childhood years living in Urbandale. She loved riding her pinto horse “Calamity Jane,” was active in music and drama, was a member of the National Honor Society, and graduated from Urbandale High School in 1973. She attended college at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. Sandy trained and received certification as an EMT at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines and was a gifted pianist. She served as a faithful organist for multiple congregations, including Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Capital Heights United Methodist Church, and United Church of Christ.


Her best accomplishment, however, was raising her son Kristopher James Finzel. She was a devoted mother and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Sandy was preceded in death by her mother, Marie, and grandparents Mellie Maude (Smith) and Bert Hume and Alice (Beary) and Dwight Hamlin.


Survivors include son, Kristopher of Des Moines; father, Kenneth Hume of Waukee; sister and brother-in-law, Dr. Melodee (Hume) and Bruce Woodard of rural Madison County, Iowa, and nieces, Dr. Kate Woodard of Enumclaw, Washington and Kelly (Woodard) Bruett (husband Joshua) of Dublin, Ireland.


A private graveside service and Celebration of Sandy’s Life will be held on Monday, February 22nd.
