Sam Kranovich, age 68 of West Des Moines, died on Monday, February 6, 2023, peacefully at home in West Des Moines. There will be a public celebration of life on Sunday, February 12th at 1:00 PM at the Valley High School Fieldhouse. This will be a “Spirit Out!” event for Sam, please wear your Valley colors. Sam was born on January 29, 1955, in Des Moines to Joseph & Anna (Dicklich) Kranovich. He graduated from Valley High School in 1973 and chose to make Valley his main career up until his death. Sam held many positions at Valley over the years. Student Supervisor, Study Hall and Parking Lot Monitor, and Football Ticket Coordinator. Sam was well known for helping anyone and was passionate about working with the students and faculty on all school activities from band trips to props and lighting for school plays. Sam was inducted into the Valley High School Hall of Honor in April 2022 for his many roles and accomplishments over his years with the school.
Sam was a West Des Moines Volunteer Firefighter and earned numerous certifications. He worked countless hours at the firehouse doing support in training, hiring and was the primary organizer of the yearly pancake breakfast. He was also a past president of the West Des Moines Firefighters Association.
Sam also worked part time for Brooks Funeral Home and Iowa Funeral Planning assisting with the logistics of the funerals. He always made sure you were in the right place at the right time!
Sam enjoyed working and being actively involved in the West Des Moines community. He was voted 2012 West Des Moines Citizen of the Year based on his long history of community service. He served as president and committee member of many organizations including West Des Moines Dollars for Scholars, Wes Des Moines Lions Club, Iowa Senior Olympic Organizing Committee, and various Iowa State Fair Committees.
Sam was a member of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church for 60 years and enjoyed working on his Serbian family history and attending Iowa Cubs and Iowa Wild games.
Sam is survived by his Aunt & Uncle Jeanette & George Hobbs, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, younger brothers Joseph and Michael and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
