Larry G. Lockey

Larry Gene Lockey, age 83, passed away Friday morning, February 14, 2025, at his residence. He was born May 25, 1941, in Charles City, Iowa, a son of the late Lowell Lockey and Virginia Regel Lockey.

‍‍

He was the first born out of six children and grew up caring for his mom and siblings. Larry graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1959. He worked with his father at Skelly and Conoco service stations from 1959 to 1965, and he worked at Flynn Dairy from around 1966 to 1997 when he retired.

Larry had a special gift for drawing and once engaged in an art course. He was also a talented carpenter and loved working on all things mechanical. Even as a youth he could fix or build anything. He and his wife, Janette, built their own home in 1988.

Larry enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially with his brothers, Jerry and Terry; his son, Dave; his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also liked playing cards with family and friends and spending time with his large family. Larry was a private and quiet person, but he was also very witty and fun! His quirky sense of humor kept everyone in stitches.

Larry is survived by his spouse of almost 40 years, Janette Lockey; son, John Lockey; daughter, Leanna Battreall; stepdaughter, Amelia Lesemann; 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, five siblings, and several other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his son David Lockey.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Brooks Funeral Care, 2135 SW 9th St, Des Moines, Iowa, 50315.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at the funeral home.

‍“His wisdom, his strength, his humor—these are the gifts he leaves behind in the hearts of those he loved.”
